FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Singaporeans going to Brisbane for the first time will usually have many questions. We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions by students answered by seniors already studying in UQ, that may help in your preparation for starting school.

ACCOMMODATIONS

What are the on-campus accommodation provided in UQ?
There are ten on-campus colleges apart from Unilodge and campus lodge. You can find out more here.

How much is the rent for off-campus accommodation?
Rent for an average apartment in St. Lucia is approximately AUD200 a week, varying depending on the proximity from the campus.



BANKING


How do I set up a bank account?
The two largest banks in Brisbane are ANZ and Commonwealth Bank. Bank accounts can be set up at any branch. Remember to bring two pieces of identification, such as your passport or driver's license, and your proof of residence in Australia.



PHONE LINE

How do I apply for an Australia SIM card?
Vodafone, 'Yes' Optus and Telstra are Australia's three main telcos. Two types of photo identification and a proof of residence in Australia must be presented to apply for a contract plan. Alternatively, you can purchase a pre-paid SIM card.



WORKING IN AUSTRALIA

Am I allowed to work in Australia?
Student visas allow students to work up to 40 hours fortnightly, and are allowed to accumulate unlimited working hours during academic holidays.



HALAL FOOD

Where can I find Halal food?
Halal food can be purchased at Coles and many different places around Brisbane. You can find a list of Halal food outlets and restaurants here.
